The passing news of the singer, Wanda Young covers the headlines of the newspapers and media. She was the singer in the Motown doo-wop girl group The Marvelettes, who passed away earlier this month outside of Detroit. She passed away at the age of 78. Her passing news is officially confirmed by her daughter Meta Ventress who informed the death news of Wanda on Saturday to The New York Times.  Meta Ventress informed the cause of her mother’s demise due to complications from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Wanda Young took her last breath on Wednesday, 15th December in Garden City, Michigan. Young replaced another singer in the Michigan group when Motown head Berry Gordy endorsed the band in the year 1961. After a month later, The Marvelettes’ “Please Mr. Postman” became the first song on the young label to appear on the top of the music charts.  Young connected with the group before their initial record deal with Motown and worked as the lead singer of the group for a time until leaving in the year 1969.


The musical group followed the success and hit with famous songs like “Don’t Mess With Bill”, “My Baby Must Be A Magician” which both featured Young providing lead singer. Apart from this she also featured in notable songs including  Beechwood 4-5789, Locking Up My Heart, The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game, Too Many Fish In The Sea, and  I’ll Keep Holding On. She also went on to have a solo career.

The Marvelettes are accompanied as Motown’s breakout girl group, paving the way for other iconic groups such as The Supremes, Martha Reeves, and the Vandellas, and The Velvelettes. The group which at several times also consisted of members Gladys Horton (passed away in the year 2011),  Ann Bogan, Katherine Anderson, Juanita Cowart, and  Georgeanna Tillman (who passed away in the year 1980) honored with a Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame nomination in the year 2013.

The group’s record label Motown issued a statement on Friday in which they said, “We are so disheartened by the passing news of Wanda Young of the Marvelettes. What an impact she had on the world of Classic Motown and the lives of so many others. Her legacy will continue to live on.” The frequent collaborator of Smokey Robinson left behind 3 children, 7 grandchildren, a great-grandson, 4 brothers, and 4 sisters.

As we earlier informed the demise news of popular American singer, Wanda Young. The netizens are keen to know more about the band Marvelettes and keenly searching about it. The late singer Wanda Young was one of the original members of the girl group Marvelettes, who has been passed away on Wednesday, 15th December 2021. At the time of passing, she was 78 years old. The news came to the fore after the daughter of the late singer, Meta Ventress, disclosed to The New York Times on Saturday, 25th December. As per her, Young has died due to chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complications.

Ventress stated that her mother passed away 2 weeks back, on 15th December 2021, in Michigan’s Garden City. Wanda Young was one of the members of the Marvelettes endorsed to the 1960s Motown’s Tame label. She became the lead singer of the group after the exit of Georgia Dobbins.

Other Members Of The Marvelettes Apart From Wanda Young

The group created in 1961, The Marvelettes consisted of 5 women- Wyanetta Cowart (1944), Wanda Young (1944), – Gladys Horton (1945), Georgeanna Tillman (1943), and Katherine Anderson (1944). At that time, the girls were pupils at Inkster High School, based in the suburbs of Detriot. One of their ex-group mates, Georgia Dobbins, was a graduate and together they were called The Casinyets.

Horton conducted the quintet to be a part of a talent show offering an audition with a Motown Records scout as the top prize. In the spite of failing to win, the group was permitted to audition. A Motown representative recommended the group try some original material, which consequences in the song Please Mr. Postman.

The founder of Motown, Berry Gordy, Jr. signed the singers, and their debut single was emendated version of the song Please Mr. Postman, featuring Marvin Gaye on drums. The song became the first number-one single of Motown and reached the top of the pop charts. Some of their other successful and hit songs include The Hunter Gets Captured by the Gane, My Baby Must Be A Magician, Beechwood 4-5789, Don’t Mess with Bill, Too Many Fish In The Sea, and When You are Young And In Love.

Young recorded under another label after The Marvelettes dispersed in the early 1970s. According to New York Times, in the year 1990, Young and Horton came up on the album The Marvelettes: Now! Young was one of the surviving members of The Marvelettes.
