Paul was born in the Boston suburb of Brookline, Massachusetts, the son of William and Anna Lester Pender. He was graduated from Brookline High School in 1949. Pender was recruited as an All-American football player by Michigan State and Penn State but he go for professional boxing while attending Staley College. However, he was a champion in boxing. He considers boxing to be his second job and a Brooklyn firefighter his first.

He was an amateur, he won the New England welterweight title. Now, Paul was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps. Sugar Ray Robinson’s middleweight title was revoked by the United States Boxing Association in 1959. Gene Fulmer defeats Carmen Basilio for the vacant NBA championship. For the disputed middleweight title, Paul beat out one of the greatest fighters of all time, Robinson. In the Round of 15, he won a split decision. To defend his championship, Paul faced Robinson again, and this time he won a split decision.

How many boxing champions did he play?

Only the third (April 7, 1962) of Paul’s three battles with British boxer Terry Downes went the entire distance. Pender won games one and three, but the fourth game would be his only game of the year and his career’s final year. In 2005, he joined the Tawse team and in 2006, he became the head winemaker. Under Paul’s management, Tawse received Ecocert organic and Demeter biodynamic certification. It was also awarded Canadian Winery of the year for three consecutive years (2010-2012) and 2016 as well. He also got the title of Winemaker of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards in 2011. He was also a carpenter before becoming a winemaker. He was in the second graduating class of Niagara College’s Winery and viticulture program. It has been announced that all the Retail Stores and Restaurants at Tawse & Redstone will be closed till Wednesday next week. Paul Pender has passed away on 04 February 2022.
