Who was Gurmeet Bawa?

Talking about Gurmeet Bawa, so she was an Indian Punjabi language folk singer who was born on 18 February 1944 in Kothe, Punjab, British India, to her parents S. Uttam Singh and Ram Kaur.  When she was 2, her mother left the world.  At that time, the girls didn’t have permission to study or go out without their parent’s or elders’ permission but Gurmeet dreamt to become a teacher and managed to complete JBT, later she became the first girl to be a teacher in her area. She was married to Kirpal Bawa who is also a Punjabi folk singer. She had three daughters with her husband.

In 1968, she began her singing career when her husband encouraged her. She was able to sing with several Punjabi folk instruments such as Dholki, Tumbi, Algoze, and Chimta. In 1991, she has won State Award from the Punjab government. Apart from this, he also received several awards including Devi Ahillya Award, Shromani Gayika Award, and Sangeet Puruskar. She was mainly known for her most popular song Hek. Her two daughters Lachi Bawa and Galori Bawa are singers. She passed away at 77 on 21 November 2021 in a private hospital.
