Aquinas FC Junior Section stated Mr McGarvey had represented their club since he was just 7 years old. They wrote, “The committee, coaches, and players of Aquinas FC wish to offer our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and teammates of our player Fionntan McGarvey. Fionntan was a member of our Senior and Under 19 teams have represented the club from the age of 7.
“On behalf of our members, the club passes on its sympathies to the parents of Fionntan, Aveen and Lorcan, his sister Sorcha, and his brothers Daire and Caolan. May he rest in peace.”
St Brigids GAC further added: “It is with sadness that we declare the demise news of Fionntan McGarvey, who was a member of our Under20 & Senior Football Panel.”
The GAA club at Queen’s University Belfast also paid tribute to Mr McGarvey. They stated all their GAA activity is to cease on Thursday evening as a mark of respect.
PSNI Detective Chief Inspector Raymond Phelan stated: We believe that Fionntan was assaulted outside licensed premises at 01:00 AM on Monday, 27th of December 2022. The investigation officers attended and Fionntan was immediately admitted to the hospital for treatment of his wounds. Tragically, in the spite of treatment, he passed away this morning.”
