Fatima Sheikh was an Indian educator and social reformer, who was a colleague of the social reformers Savitribai Phule and Jyotiba Phule. Google Doodle honours a social reformer on Sunday, 9th January 2022 who is the feminist icon Fatima Sheikh on her 191st birth anniversary. She is broadly known as India’s first Muslim woman teacher. Hailed ad “lifelong champion” in her field, Sheikh, alongside social reformers Savitribai Phule and Jyotiba Phule, co-founded one of India’s first schools for girls in the year 1848 and named it the Indigenous Library. The beautiful Google Doddle in a combination of white, blue, and yellow adds an illustration of Sheikh along with two opens books in the background. The doodle is simple yet presents the career of Sheikh at a glance.

Fatima Sheikh Biography 

Fatima Sheikh was the sister of Mian Usman Sheikh, in whose house Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule took up residence. One of the first Muslim women educators of modern India, she began educating Dalit children in the school of Phule. Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao along with Fatima Sheikh took charge of spreading education among the downtrodden communities. Vfgju Sheikh met Savitribai Phule whereas both were enrolled at a teacher training institution run by Cynthia Farrar, an American missionary. She taught at all 5 schools that the Phule went on the build and she taught children of all castes and religions. Sheikh took part in the founding of two schools in Bombay (which is now known as Mumbai) in the year 1851.

She was born on 9th January 1831, in Pune, Fatima Sheikh is hailed for her resilience and pioneering role in the supporting ie of education for everyone. As a young girl, she lived with her brother Usman. The siblings opened their house to Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao after they were eliminated for trying to educate people who belong to lower castes. Eventually, Sheikh, alongside her fellow pioneers and social reformers Savitribai Phule and Jyotirao, co-founded the Indigenous Library in the year 1848.
