On Wednesday (9th of March 2022), Dr. John K. Younes, the chief medical examiner of Manitoba ordered the probe saying in a news release that it will aid determine what, if anything, can be done to prevent similar demises in the future. When he was serving more than a 6 years conviction for aggravated assault Fillion got engaged in a fight with other inmates and was discovered unresponsive with apparent stab injuries in his cell at Stony Mountain Institution in the month of April 2019.
When he was found unresponsive with apparent stab wounds he was instantly taken to Stonewall Hospital and declared dead, the release from Younes’s office stated. He died of numerous stab wounds. Fellow inmates Kevin Curtis Edwards and Peter Fisher later pleaded guilty to 1st-degree murder. Both were convicted to life in jail in the year 2020 and would not be eligible for parole for 25 years.
A 3rd person was accused of being engaged in the crime and hiding the murder weapon but he was later acquitted. Fillion was stabbed an estimated 52 times and targeted because he was an s*x offender, as mentioned in the court documents. Details about the date, time, and whereabouts of the probe will be determined by the chief judge of the provincial court of Manitoba and released at a later date.
