WATCH: Jacob Panetta Twitter Video Goes Viral On Social Media: On Sunday, 23rd January 2022, The ECHL’s Jacksonville Icemen released defenseman after Jordan Subban, the defenseman of South Carolina Stingrays stated he was subjected to a racist gesture at the time of the game which was played on Saturday, 22nd January 2022. After that, the league suspended Panetta continually, pending a hearing under the collective bargaining agreement of the league. Later Sunday, Panetta issued a response on Twitter, tagging Subban and also captioning the video, “racism has no place in this globe and no place in the match we love.” He stated that the gesture he made toward Subban was a “strong and tough guy, bodybuilder-like” one at the time of a confrontation on the ice. He further added that he has made the same gesture to “non-racialized players a number of times” in his entire career. Subban said Panetta made a gesture of monkey towards his direction. His sibling, P.K Subban the defenseman of New Jersey Devils, later made a tweet on the video of the incident (which is currently making rounds all over the web) which happened 23 seconds into overtime.

Jordan Subban made the tweet after the match in which he said “More like (Panetta) was too much of a weakling to fight me and as soon as I started to turn my back he began making the gestures of monkey at me so I punched him hard in the face numerous times and he turtled like the weakling he is.”

In his video, Panetta stated “no racist noises, insults, or anything of the like, were stated by me at the time of the incident.” Whereas he stated there were no racial intentions behind the gesture, Panetta made the apologies for the “pain and suffering and fury my actions have caused him, his family, and whosoever who was hurt by this.”

Panetta further stated, “I confess the impact of my gesture and will commit to better understand the impact going forward. Those who know me very well understand it was not intended to be racial, it is not who I am, it is not how I have been brought up. But at the same time, I require to and I will learn from this, Racism and other forms of biasness and discrimination have no place in society, including hockey. I believed that prior to, and I still believe that now.”

Jacksonville stated in a statement that the release of Panetta is “effective instantly” and the probe is still going on at the level of the league.

Jordan Subban is a Canadian professional ice hockey defenceman. At this time, he is playing in the ECHL for the South Carolina stingrays. He is also under the contract to the AHL (American Hockey League) for the Hershey Bears. He was selected in the 4th round of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft by the Vancouver Canucks. The elder brother of Jordan is P.K.  Subban who is a Norris Trophy-winning defenceman with the New Jersey Devils. His other brother, Malcolm is playing for the Buffalo Sabres as a goaltender.
