According to the latest reports, 83 years old singer Prafulla Kar took his last breath at his residence in Satya Nagar in Bhuwneshwar in Orissa on Sunday night (17 April) at around 10 pm. The cause of his death is said to be some age-related health issues as he was suffering from them for quite some time. He is survived by his wife, Manorama Kar, and their children- Sandhyadipa Kar, Mahaprasad Kar, and Mahadeep Kar. Since the news of his death broke out, several well-known personalities have been expressing their condolences to his family and friends.

Prafulla Kar was an Oriya musician, singer, writer, columnist, and lyricist. He was born on 16 February 1939 in Puri, Bengal Presidency, British Raj. In 2015, he received Padma Shri, the 4th highest civilian award by the Government of India for his contribution in the field of arts. He was the son of Baidyanath Kar and Susila Kar. His uncle Khetra Mohan Kar was a famous Tabla player. He worked as a music director and as a singer in 70 Oriya films and also in 4 Bangla Films.
