The businessman was a federal president of the Liberal Party from the year 1987 to 1990, he was also the treasurer and vice-president of the Liberal party in Victoria and was its federal treasurer.

He has also served as the president of the Carlton Football Club from 1983 to 2002 which is presiding over two AFL premierships, the name of his son Tom Elliott who has confirmed the death of his father to the Herald Sun on Thursday in the evening.
