Indooroopilly Flood Death Toll
The Moorooka man managed to run away from his car when it became submerged in floodwaters on Witton Raod about 02:30 AM on Sunday (27th February 2022), as per the police. After freeing himself, he tried to swim to safety as closeby residents watched on. They raised the alarm when he disappeared beneath the water and failed to resurface.
Emergency services reached and located his body a short time later. A report will be prepared for the Coroner. This comes after the body of a 37-year-old Goomboorian man who allegedly fell off a boat near the mouth of Breakfast Creek around 04:45 PM on Saturday.
“If It Is Flooded, Forget It”
The region is being battered by many serious thunderstorms from a low-pressure trough sitting over the southeast of the state. On Saturday, Gympie Council was evacuating 700 people living along the swollen Mary River, which was expected to rise above its highest level in 23 years. Among those who have passed away from the floods was SES volunteer Merryl Dray who was assassinated when the car she was in with 3 other volunteers was swept off a road en-route to a rescue on the night of Friday.
Queensland Fire and Emergency Servies Commissioner Greg Leach explained the death of a 62-year-old as a “tragic loss”. Steve Gollschewski, the Deputy Police Commissioner urged people not to leave home unless they absolutely had to in the middle of warnings of possible “dangerous and life-menacing” flash floods. He stated, “We do not want to lose any more people, so please, please if it is flooded, forget it.”
