Around 40 horses took to the start line and tackled the 30 fences. 1 horse in the Grand National- the main event of the festival which ran on Saturday evening has been asserted to have passed away. How Many Horses Died In The Grand National 2022?
The Grand National festival which runs over a number of days at Aintree had already watched a couple of tragedies. 2 horses had passed away at the festival this year. There were painful scenes on Saturday when hours prior to the main event, Elle Est Belle suffered a suspected cardiac arrest as she finished 4th in the novices load. Solwara One, ridden by jockey Sam Twiston-Davies, had become the 1st fatality of the race week of this year following the 1:45 PM race on Friday.
The RSCPA has criticized the demise stating that “the demise of any horse is always one too several”, while animals rights activists and campaign groups have long called for more rigid safety measures to be introduced within horse racing.
How Many Horses Have Passed Away At The Grand National?
Since the 1st Grand National in the year 1839, 86 horses have passed away at the time of the race itself, with closely half of these demises taking place between 2000 and 2012. Last year, The Long Mile had to be put down at the time of the main race having suffered a wound while running on the flat course, 2 years after Up for Review lost his life at Aintree.
At Aintree alone, 55 horses have passed away since the year 2000, including 15 at the time of the Grand National itself, whereas in the year 2021 there were 200 horses fatalities across Britain. 2 horses- Elle Est Belle and Solwara One have passed away at the 2022 Festival. While modern jump racing races have an average of just over 4 equine fatalities for every 1,000 horses taking part, the National had 7 fatalities out of 439 horses taking part between the years 2000 and 2010.
