He was better known as a journalist whose wide-ranging critical essays and interviews, primarily about Black Music, filmmaking, and art, in the year 1978, he joined the staff of the Village Voice, then a culturally influential weekly newspaper, he showed a vibrant flair for language, broad-reaching, allusion and observations on culture.
Mr. Tate told the Washington Times in the year 1992, “I am concerned about how black people express their humanity in the world, whether it be on the campus, on the page, or physically. I try to use whatever tools are critically available to me to try to understand that humanity.”
