Police watchdog Ipid seems to be investigating the case of assault against the Eastern Cape police officer, he has been accused of dragging DA federal chair Helen Zille out of the Fernwood Park Primary School voting station in Bethelsdrop on Monday.
It has been stated by Zille that due to the long queue, she walked down the line asking people to wait, she further stated, when she got to the front of the queue, the ANC accused her of canvassing, she then alleged that the officer instructed her to leave the premises and threatened her with the arrest and put her in the back of the police vehicle.
It has been confirmed by Grace Langa who is the Independent Police Investigative Directorate spokesperson that their Eastern Cape office received a complaint of assault against Zille, it has been stated by Langa that officers have allegedly mishandled her.
Helen Zille Arrest: Another Mishap On The Same Day
This incident has happened just after a Newsroom Afrika journalist has also been on the receiving end of some heavy-handed treatment from the authorities, Ziniko Mhalba got arrested while he was on-air, he allegedly entered a voting booth without proper media accreditation.
The reporter has denied the allegations and he has since been released from custody, it is not the first time that the tensions are high on the voting day but this time the authorities are going all out and this seems to be a step too far, Helen Zille was not injured though, he was harmed following the brush with the law.
