This serious offence has happened on the premises of the popular Shree Jagannath Temple in Odisha’s Puri town. This shaming incident took place when the girl who is from Hyderabad was offering prayers at a smaller temple on the premises of the 12th-century holy place. In the report, it is mentioned that she was alone in Bamana temple whereas her parents were inside the main temple. There are around 136 smaller temples on the premises of the Shree Jagannath Temple.
As per the FIR registered by the sufferer parents at Singhadwar police station, when the incident took place the girl ran out of the Bamana temple crying and informed the entire incident to her mother. After the complaint was lodged, the priest was detained on Friday, 8th October 2021 and apprehended at the time of the day. The police have also informed the chief welfare committee about this shaming incident. After lodging the FIR, the statement of the girl has been recorded prior to a magistrate and legal action is being taken against the culprit, according to the Superintendent of Police, Kanwar Vishal Singh.
Why was Puri Female Priest Arrested?
The name of the accuser is Sangram Dash (27-year-old) on Saturday. Dash allegedly performed the offence when the minor girl was offering prayer and no other devotees were present when the serious and alleged offence has happened. Her parents were waiting outside the Bamana temple when she ran out shrieking and narrated the entire incident to them. Dash was arrested under relevant sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POSCO) act.
Superident of the Police of Puri, K V Singh, stated that the police took the matter very seriously. “All requisite legal actions were promptly taken,”. Taking strong note of the incident, Puri Child Welfare Committee (CWC) has written a letter to the temple body and district administration to take serious actions and steps for the safety of children and women on the premises of the temple.
