Elijah McCoy is known as the African-American inventor hailed from Michigan who revolutionized the railroad industry. In the year 1872, Elijah McCoy gets his first patent for an automatic lubricating device. Previously, engines had to be shut down prior to lubrication could be applied. The invention of McCoy empowered engines to be lubricated while they were running, saving both money and time. He was born in the mid-1840s, almost 170 years prior to the office being established. He was the possessor of more than 50 patents.

In the year 1920, McCoy opened his own firm named the Elijah McCoy Manufacturing Company, in order to produce his products himself rather than licensing his designs to existing firms. Sadly, McCoy suffered in his last years, enduring a mental, financial, and then physical breakdown that brought him to the hospital. Elijah McCoy passed away on 10th October 1929, at the age of 85, in the Elosie Infirmary in Nankin Township, now Westland, Michigan, from senile dementia caused by hypertension after spending a year in the  Eloise Infirmary in Michigan.
