Gardai stated the man, aged in his 60s, was out cycling with a group of other cyclists on the R731 at Ballywilliam, New Ross, around 01:00 PM yesterday when the man is understood to have struck a tree as the group deflect to avoid an obstruction on the road. They instantly raised the alarm and emergency services tended to the cyclist but he passed away a short time later at the scene. The reports suggested that his body was removed to the mortuary at University Hospital Waterford where an autopsy will take place in due course. The local Coroner has been informed regarding the incident. During the investigation, it is found that no other vehicles were engaged in the incident but local diversions were put in place to permit a technical examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators.
Cyclist Dies Following Freak Accident
The man who lost his life after a freak cycling accident in County Wexford on Sunday has been named Mark Flood from New Ross. Mr Flood was in his 60s and was well known as the proprietor of Brooks Jewelers and gift shop in Co Wexford town. He was cycling with other members of the local Barrow Wheelers cycling club on the R731 on Sunday when the cycling group swerved to avoid a hinder on the road and Mr Flood struck a tree.
In the spite of being treated at the scene by emergency services, Mr Flood passed away shortly. After this tragic incident, The Barrow Wheelers club today paid tribute to him on its Facebook page with a poignant message. It reads that “Yesterday we lost one of our Heroes. Rest in Peace our forever loved Friend, Mark Flood.” A picture accompanied the message, viewing Mr Flood in his cycling gear smiling and looking at the camera while riding his bike in the sunshine.
Anthony Connick, Local independent councilor stated he knew Mr Flood very well over the years and explained him as a true gentleman whose demised has shattered the local community.
