The shooting happened during the Sam Moir Basketball Tournament which was being held at the college, it has been stated by the police that there are more than 400 people who have attended the high school game when shots got fired inside the gym’s lobby. In a statement, Rowan-Salisbury Schools announced that the remainder of the tournament was canceled. Around 8:30 pm, Catawba College issues a shelter in place for those who were there at the campus at the time, shortly after 10:30 pm, the college has announced that the shelter in place had been lifted, the residents were asked to remain inside until 6:00 am.
