As per the sources, the woman suffered from the geographic trophy. It is the most common form of dry age-related macular degeneration that affects millions of people all over the world and can also cause vision loss. The 88 years old female patient who lost her left eyesight has now been given back some vision after Moorfields Eye Hospital’s surgeons successfully implanted a microchip under her retina. The name of the patient is not revealed yet but she is the first patient in the UK to get the implant that too, successfully.

However, the implantation is currently undergoing clinical trials across Europe. The main purpose of this technology is to restore eyesight in people who are suffering from geographical atrophy. This condition is progressive and strikes almost 7% of those who are over 80. They are no effective treatments, currently. The recipient stated, “Losing the sight in my left eye through dry AMD has stopped me from doing the things I love, like gardening, playing indoor bowls, and painting with watercolors.”

She said that she is thrilled to be the first to have this implant, curious at the prospect of enjoying my hobbies and she truly hopes that others can also get benefit from this implantation as well. She got the Prima System device, created by Pixium Vision in France. The implant works by surgically putting a 2mm-wide microchip under her retina’s center part. Later, the patient wears special glasses, which contain a video camera connected to a small computer and attached to their waistband.
